This project was a unique opportunity to re-think the future of the Nike Running app. So many apps that we call 'utilitarian' are very...well, boring. Like a bathroom mirror, they only reflect the information we expect to see. How do we take the conventions of a mirror and reflect something smarter, more dynamic, and more useful? I envisioned a body of water and the way it ripples and reacts to movement - like a lake when a pebble is thrown into it.

During the beginning stages of planning the app, I was part of a 4 person team of designers. We were each assigned a specific section of the Nike Running App to fully engage with. I was given the profile page. The following is a high level look at my process - from design, to thought, and, finally, to execution.

The first iteration was extremely fun as a designer, even though I only re-skinned pages. Many designers would have had a hell of a time working on this design, but as a product designer, my appetite only grew. Below are the first designs that I created to execute my aesthetic vision.

Taking a step forward sometimes means taking a step back. It was time to go back to the drawing board and think about what it means to be a runner without an app, and what the Nike Running community would look like without technology.
I wanted to have the app be less of a static mirror, and more like a living substance. Rather than have information just reflect reminders (of your last run or your run from two days ago), I wanted the app to grow with each run.
Ultimately, each user within the nike running community would have very different profiles from one another.
I broke down the idea into 5 starting categories: Who I am, What I'm Doing, Where I'm Going, How I Get There, and Newer Generated Content (i.e. the current wear-and-tear of my shoes).

The above title, as you already know, is a common saying - ish. By no means are the following designs what I would envision as the "end" result, but the result of satisfaction in a process. Everything can be better, this is just a snapshot of that "ah" moment.
